Safari and Zanzibar trip planning, costs and itinerary ideas
Book a Tanzania split stay with a safari base near Serengeti or Ngorongoro and a Zanzibar beach hotel, then compare the live room total by date.

If you are planning safari and Zanzibar, start by deciding the order of the nights. Safari first, beach last usually keeps early starts, park logistics and luggage changes together, then leaves the island for slower days at the end.
We help you compare safari and Zanzibar stays with live hotel search before payment. To choose changeover points and beach bases, see our Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar Hotels guides, then match dates, guests and room conditions for the trip shape you want this year.
Best pairings for a safari and Zanzibar trip
| Pairing | Best for | Trip shape | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serengeti and Zanzibar | A stronger safari focus before the coast | Longer northern circuit plus beach finish | Transfer timing, park fees and room total |
| Ngorongoro and Zanzibar | A shorter safari with high wildlife value | Fewer safari nights and an easier changeover | Crater access, lodge location and checkout time |
| Arusha and Zanzibar | A transit-friendly start or finish | Useful as a pre-safari or post-safari night | Pickup plan, airport link and luggage handling |
| Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar | A city stop before the island | Helpful for ferry or airport connections | Departure point and one-night timing |
A practical comparison of common split stays. Room totals are not fixed here because live rates change by date, occupancy and room conditions.
Which trip order works best?
For most travellers, safari and Zanzibar works best as safari first and beach second. That keeps the early starts, park drives and luggage changes together, then leaves the island for quieter days at the end. It is also easier to judge how many beach nights you want once the mainland part is fixed.
If your trip starts near the northern circuit, an Arusha stop can make the first mainland night cleaner. Our Hotels in Arusha for a Tanzania safari base guide helps with pickup questions and airport choice. If your route starts or ends on the coast side, our Hotels in Dar es Salaam for city stays and Zanzibar connections guide helps you compare city stays without assuming a same day connection will suit every itinerary.
Which pairings give the cleanest value?
The best pairing is the one that matches your safari length to the kind of finish you want. Serengeti and Zanzibar is the classic choice when wildlife is the main priority. Ngorongoro and Zanzibar can work better when you want a shorter mainland segment but still want a strong stop before the coast.
Arusha and Zanzibar is more of a staging combination than a full safari pairing, but it can be useful for arrivals or departures. Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar is practical when the city itself is mainly a connection point. For beach areas, compare Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje in our Zanzibar hotels in Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje guide. For budget structure, see Tanzania safari cost: lodge, vehicle and park fees explained and Tanzania trip cost for safari, beach and Kilimanjaro.
How do the costs actually work?
There is no single price for safari and Zanzibar. The hotel total changes with dates, occupancy, currency and room conditions, while safari costs can add separate park, vehicle, guide and activity charges. Use the room total as one part of the budget, not the whole trip.
For park side charges, use the official TANAPA Park Fees and Tariffs page to reconfirm the current fee categories and park specific items that apply to your route rather than relying on older summaries. From 1 October 2026, the official notice says travellers entering through Mainland Tanzania use NIC, while travellers entering through Zanzibar use ZIC. NIC also says its mainland scheme excludes residents of EAC and SADC partner states, so check the insurer for your first entry point and any exemption that applies rather than assuming you will pay twice (Embassy notice; NIC FAQ).

What should a seven to ten day route look like?
A practical planning version is seven to ten days, with safari first and beach second. One clean shape is an arrival night on the mainland, two or three safari nights, one changeover night if needed, then three or four nights in Zanzibar. That is a planning model, not an offered package or a promise that every connection will line up on the same day.
- Arrive and settle into your first mainland base.
- Keep the safari nights together.
- Add a changeover night if the route feels tight.
- Move to Zanzibar after the park segment is finished.
- Use the last nights for beach time or Stone Town.
For timing, compare Best Time to Visit Tanzania by Month with Best Time to Visit Zanzibar for beaches, tides and city time. The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism treats June to October as broad dry season guidance, not a guarantee of perfect beach weather (official guidance).
What should you confirm before paying?
Before payment, confirm the stay dates, occupancy, room conditions and full total with taxes and fees. Then check what the selected rate actually covers. On a safari stay, transport, guiding, permits, transfers and activities are separate unless the offer clearly includes them. On the coast, the room type, meal plan and beach location often matter more than the headline price.
If you want a wider route check, our Best national parks in Tanzania and what to check before you pay park fees page helps you compare park priorities before you choose the mainland side. If the budget is your main concern, our Is Zanzibar expensive? Real trip costs and how to pay less breakdown helps you think about island spending beyond the room total.
How do you book the two halves without confusion?
The clearest booking method is to search the safari stay and the Zanzibar stay separately, then connect them with your own transfer plan. That makes it easier to compare rate conditions, taxes and what is included on each side. We book hotel rooms, resort stays, car rental and activities, while flights are switched off.
If you want background on what we cover, start with About EA Booking. You can then use our Travel guides and Travel blog to narrow the route before opening live hotel search. If you need clarification on a selected room or its conditions, email info@eabooking.com. Confirm the exact room, dates and inclusions before payment rather than assuming a safari service is bundled with the hotel stay.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an overnight mainland stop before Zanzibar?
Sometimes. An Arusha night can simplify an early safari departure, while a Dar es Salaam night can help when your mainland arrival and Zanzibar connection do not line up well. If the route feels tight, add a changeover night instead of forcing a same day transfer. That usually protects beach time better at the end.
Should I book Serengeti and Zanzibar in one checkout?
Usually no. Treat the safari stay and the Zanzibar stay as separate room bookings, then confirm the transfer plan between them. That makes it easier to compare room conditions, taxes, meal plans and cancellation terms on each side. It also reduces confusion about which mainland services are included, if any, with your chosen rate details.
Can I do safari and Zanzibar in seven nights?
Yes, but it will feel tighter. A workable version is one mainland arrival night, two or three safari nights, then three island nights. If wildlife is the main priority, add safari time. If rest matters more, shorten the park segment and protect the final beach nights from rushed transfers and late changes where possible too.
What costs sit outside the hotel room total?
The hotel room total does not automatically cover park fees, guiding, vehicle use, permits, transfers or activities. Those items are separate unless the selected offer clearly says otherwise. You should also check any mainland or Zanzibar arrival charges that apply to your entry point. Read the rate details carefully before payment so nothing is assumed.
Is beach time better in Stone Town, Nungwi or Paje after safari?
It depends on how you want the last days to feel. Stone Town suits a short historic stop, Nungwi works well for a classic beach finish, and Paje appeals if you want a different coast atmosphere. Compare beach location, room conditions and meal plan together, not the headline rate alone after safari on the island.
